ANTHOCON- 2011- Thoughts, reflections and thanks.

We pulled into Portsmouth feeling about half-passed dead…

Through the pouring rain and steely grey skies, a light appeared-- Shattering the clouds like a razor sharp katana through a rotted zombie’s pus-filled head.

We smiled as the light from the hotel stood out like a beacon saving us from the rain.

Inside, we would find lodging; dry clothes and more amazing folks than you could shake an empty whisky bottle at.

Anthology: Anthocon for short was our destination and we had arrived. And by the end of the long, but life changing five days, I truly felt that I had arrived. At least was well on my way.

I have been going to conventions of all kinds since I was a teen. Back then, they were mostly comic book, Dungeons & Dragons (Role-playing), Science Fiction cons. However, since I started my writing career almost five years ago, writing and horror conventions have been my usual haunts today. And while I haven’t been to tons of writer/horror cons, I will say hands down, that after this past weekend, ANTHOCON is the best by far. And holy hell Batman, this was just their first year! Can you imagine what the next five, 10 years will bring? Pure unadulterated, awesomeness. That’s what!

The Four Horsemen: Tim Deal, Danny Evarts, Mark Wholley and ZjOhnny Morse truly outdid themselves with this convention. From the minute you walked into the hotel conference area, these gentlemen were firing on all four cylinders. Were there little things here and there, of course, even the “big” cons have issues. We are all human beings after all.

I purchased my first ever table and was extremely nervous and worried, but those guys went out of their way to make me feel (as well as Shelly, my wife/Publicist/Motivator/inspiration) like I/we were family. Moreover, I am damn sure they did the same for every other single vendor/author/guest and attendee that came through those doors. See, you are not just a number or dollar sign at ANTHCON. No sir, you are a valued member of the Anthology family. I have never felt like that at any other convention, whether it be a fiction or gaming con.

For me, the con started Thursday night and as I alluded to above, we drove through driving rain for the majority of the trip but we still made it in good time.

The night was spent with Danny Evarts, Scott Christian Carr, Will Prescott, Salena Bargsley, and some of our new favorite folks, Jackie and Dan Gamber. Oh, and who the hell IS Dan Haggerty anyway?

I had my first scotch. They say the stuff is high end and expensive. All I know is that it kicked moby ass, the 12-year-old Jameson whiskey wasn’t too shabby.

It was a relatively early night, as we all knew that the frivolity and shenanigans that were about to wreak havoc on our Anthocon buttocks.

First day of the con and set up and registration were first on the list. From my perspective, it went smooth and efficient.

One of the first writer pals I saw was one, Mr. Gord Rollo. What a super guy and uber-talented writer. Although, I will admit I was jealous, as he had an ice-cold beer in his hand. Sonofa!!!! No worries dear readers, this here Irish writer made right quick to remedy that unfortunate situation.

I found my table with my name on it and of course blushed and broke into my typical red Irish wide smile. Shelly and I set up and spent thirty minutes getting the books, posters just right. (Although, Dan Gamber would come along later and tell us were doing it all wrong. LOL)

As the dealer room opened, I sat there, behind my table, flooded with a sea of emotions. I was nervous, excited, freaked, beyond happy. I sat and reflected, as I did a lot over the next three days, just how far I’d come as a writer and even more importantly, how far I needed to go. But I dig that. I will never “make it”. I don’t want to ever be complacent. My work, much like me as a person, is very much a work-in-progress. Art doesn’t have a destination. You never “arrive”. You write a story, edit it, submit it, some get published some don’t. Then you start the process over again, all the while, honing your craft with each project. I have been extremely lucky in that I have found some great mentors and amazing writer/editor friends that have been kind enough to share their advice with me and point me in the right direction. When my first novel is published, I have a list of all of those heaven-sent folks that I owe it all too. But for now, I will say that ANTHOCON was a yard marker for me. Let me tell you how.

As I’ve already stated, I had my first author’s table. I sold my work and actually was asked to sign them. That moved me deeply. I had the chance to meet some amazingly friendly folks and some of my writing heroes. I also learned many things about myself, not only as a writer, but also as a professional. Here is lesson one folks: Know how to handle yourself with readers, other writers and publishers. Do not ever bash, berate or put down other writers or publishers. Not only is that bad karma my friends, it’s also going to eventually bite your ass off.

I also learned more about how to sell your work as well as yourself. (Mucho thanks to Dan Gamber on that one. The man is good.) All of those experience taught will be constant companions as I continued down the path of my writing career.

I sat on my first panel and that was an inspirational experience as well. The topic was on “The Importance of Art in Fiction” in the publishing industry. As I have a Master’s degree in art education and started out the first thirty plus years of my life wanting to be a comic book artist. The other panelists were all fantastically talented guys: Michael Bailey, Joshua Andrew Belanger, Morbideus Goodell, Ogmios, Trevor Schubert and publisher Ian R. Strock. Danny Evarts, who did a bang up job and is a supremely talented dude in his own right, moderated it.

I learned so much from that panel and I want to thank the artists for sharing their experiences with me. As well, a thank you goes out to the audiences who attended and really seem to be into all of us blathering artist types.

The parties, both nights were off the flipping charts. The Hiram Grange awards are a must see and sadly since a certain, Gregory Hall wasn’t in attendance, the Big Boy Dance off did not happen. Maybe, just maybe, if we can manage to get Greg up there next year, I might jump into the dance off. Many factors will go into bringing me out of retirement, but I will at least say it’s on the table.

One of the highlights was to have finally met Jonathan Maberry in person. We had several impactful conversations, and will never forget them. He is probably the most genuine, kind guy you’d ever want to meet. A true inspiration on the writing, professional and person front indeed. Let’s hope some of his wisdom seeps into this thick skull. I think I will do all right.

Late night parties happen at Con. I accept this fact and embrace them. And at ANTHOCON, there were three nights in a row of astronomically, mind blowing bashes.

I will not divulge any of the zany activities that transpired at said parties, as I have signed a non-discloser agreement. (However, if you see me at the next con and slip me a Jameson, I just might “slip” up.)

I was going to do a blow-by-blow account of the con but that just didn’t fit the vibe of the whole weekend. It was the best time I have had in a very long time.

I had the chance to spend some quality time with old friends and made new ones that really, truly get who I am and what I am trying to do. I will always be grateful to you all!!! Much Love Gang.

Happy Halloween all your little witches, pirates and zombies out there! For all of us lovers of all things scary, dark and creepy crawly, this is our favorite time of year. So please be careful out there when out pandering for your sugar high on this fine, crisp all hallows eve. Let’s hope a little scare comes into your life and helps you to appreciate being alive.

I could spot on and on about the amazing holiday but I have bigger bats to fry with this month’s blog. Yes my old friends both old and new. I have some updates to share and a new novel to announce.

So, grab a handful of candy corn and a cold Jolt cola and let me fill your jack-o-lantern trick or treat bag full of Erbal goodness.

Death, Be Not Proud- a Zombie Anthology, that I had the delight to put together and edit for Dullahan Press/Dark Quest Books is out and available on Amazon and is THEE perfect (late) gift for Halloween or hey, Christmas is right around the corner.

My latest segment of Shamblin’ & Ramblin’ is now up and ready for your zombie-lovin’ perusal. Check it out.

I have submitted my short story, “The Cleansing” and hopefully the god’s will be smiling on me and it will be part of the “Vampires don’t sparkle” anthology coming out early next year. I really dig this satirical, yet bloody tale of my true feelings on the slow decline and destruction of the true vampire mythos. I will keep you all posted on the status of this story.

I am putting the final edits on a zombie short story I will be submitting to redneck zombie anthology coming out next year. I will fill you all in on this project as it is completed and I decide on a title. I’ve been having trouble nailing down a fitting title and that is very rare for me. So stay tuned.

“The Last in Line” zombie novel is about to get an immense face-lift. I am working closely with renowned editor Louise Bohmer I really love where the novel is headed and sincerely believe it will make all the difference in the world to making my first novel a really good one and one that will be picked up by and agent.

The big and exciting news is:

November is the national novel writing month and that’s just what I am planning on doing starting on the first.

Here is a taste of what I am so excited about starting:

“One Last Job- A Miles Mazursky Novel"

OLJ is the first in a series of fast-paced action, thriller, and supernatural novels. It’s protagonist is Miles Mazursky, an aging, alcoholic assassin who is close to reaching his retirement goal for his bank account balance. He only needs one last job to tip off the account so he can disappear to a secluded Caribbean Island and slip away to read his books, maybe even write one and where he can drink the demons from his past away

This last job was supposed to be a simple, in and out affair and offered him an astronomical amount of cash for do accept it. He couldn't turn it down. And that's when things went sideways.

The hits was put on a young girl. And Mile's has strict rules on killing people. And not killing children is number one on the list.

Can sullen Marine Sniper overcome the demons of his past as well as the outside world’s evil to save a very special young girl from certain death at the hands of the vile world of corporate greed and power-hungry medical, pharmaceutical corp-ocracies?

And in the end, saving himself?

I will keep the updates coming on the new novel and hope you all will really, really want to read it when it’s completed.

South Bound, Baby! (Well, only by 100 yards)

I’ve been working on moving the writing/ digital portion of The Studio into a spare bedroom in our house for the winter and it’s coming along nicely.

It started a while back when I decided the old room needed to be gussied up so that my prickly Muse wouldn’t blow me off until the Lilacs come back with their amazing colors and scent. So, my wife (who looks for any reason to repaint anything in the house) asks, with an anxious smile and wide eye, “So, what color?”

Why, orange of course!” I replied with a nod. After all it and green are my two favorite hues and good ol’ green wood have made me write stories about deep jungles or ornery leprechauns. Oh, wait…that’s a different story all together. ;o)

So orange it was and off we ran to the local Big-Brother Super store. Came home, popped the top and got to painting.

See, now this is where most folks would go on about how hard they worked and what a pain in the tuchus it was but truth be told, Shelly did the painting. And hey, who am I to stop her? I, hate painting walls and such and for some odd reason, that I haven’t been able to figure out or glean from the source, LOOOOVES to paint. She did a great job, as always.

Now I have orange walls.

Then came the bookshelves. Oh how I love bookshelves and the promise of things to fill them with. I know damn well you’re with me on the book thing. Don’t deny it. We all need a support group for a book addiction.

The Studio South is all set up and ready for my Muse and me. I even have a chair (it belonged to my Mother, who was a muse in her own right) for her to rest her impetuous arse in and do her job. I have big things doing this fall, winter, and need all the magic she can muster. I’ve been blessed so far, so let’s hope she stays in a giving mood.

I figured I’d share some photos of my seasonal works space. I dig it, thought you might too.

I will be blogging more over the next few months and will update my works in progress.

The Death Knell for Borders Books and what's next?

I have been aware of the deathbed issues concerning Border’s Books as we all have. Maybe it was my naivety or wishful thinking, but I figured that in the end, they would make it through the financial crisis and rebound.

Boy was I wrong.

With the death sentence officially announced for September, it raises a plethora of questions, ranging from, holy hell, I can get some killer deals on books to how does this affect me, the new writer in my pursuit of “serious” publication? It is enough to send my mind reeling and reaching for a handful of Dramamine.

I’ve come to the publishing world later than most so that often adds a bit more pressure to succeed than I think it should. But its how my mind works. The publishing world is shrinking and I struggle in developing a strategy for progressing. The whirlwind of eBooks, small presses, both high quality and the ones that are wanna-be hobbyists that would steal health care from the elderly and finally, self-publishing, yes or no? The options are limitless and yet growing smaller by the day.

So, with my favorite book store chain closing its doors, I lament their passing and morn for the thousands that will lose their jobs. My strongest, most positive vibes go out to the employees who have busted their humps, schlepping books and providing the best of customer service. You guys and gals rock!

I was never a big fan of the “other” big chain. It has a completely different vibe and “random” organizational strategy was enough to drive me bat-shit crazy.

But alas, that is all we will be left with. There aren’t many independent bookstores up here in upstate New York, but your bet your sweet patootie that I will be hunting them down come September.

That still doesn’t address the concerns I have as a new writer. It was and still is my goal to see “Thomas A. Erb” staring at me from a bookstore shelf, so with Borders going the way of the Commodore 64, I (as well as many others) must find new and creative ways to reach that goal. I’m not feeling defeated or throwing my arms up in despair. Hell no! I just need to keep my ass in chair and honing my writing and somehow, someway, I will get there. All the while, reading, learning and keeping up with the new trends and staying ahead of the publishing curve.

I still have my amazing used book store to shop in and I guess there’s always online shopping, but being an old school comic book collector from the 70’s and 80’s, there is just something magical about the sight and smell of a comic or book store. Maybe it’s the overwhelming rush of possibilities the multitudes of books offer you. Maybe it’s the hour or so of just wandering, looking at covers and reading blurbs that take you away from the crappy day you’ve had. For me, it may be the creative mojo that flows from all the magic and muse that the creators spent crafting their stories and to me. Creativity is akin to magic and I am always open to a little bit of magic in a world that seems to be losing its mojo by the Tweet or Facebook post.

Rest in Peace Borders Books! I will lament your passing and will miss the well-worn path I carved out on the carpet in front of the horror section. I guess that is the one good thing about the other “chain”, they spread their genres out so far apart, that they save a fortune on carpet.

Gabe, Alan and Erin thought one last night out on the town before their junior year of college came to an end would be fitting. They were the best of friends and not seeing each other for an entire Summer vacation was not something they were looking forward to. So they did what they always did on a Friday night – they went to a bar. Only this time they decided to try someplace new – The Torchlight Inn.

Even though there is some internal strife within the group of friends by the time they make it to the bar they are eager to try and make the night one to remember. But it’s during their time in the shabby bar that they come face to face with some seedy bar patrons, a biker gang and one strange acting bartender named, T-Bone, that make their time together all that much more interesting. But all is still well until Alan and Erin mysteriously disappear and Gabe has to try and find his friends before paying his bar tab and walking out of the joint.

Little do any of them know the secret that the place holds…

Beneath its cracked floorboards there is a whole new kind of terror waiting for them…

‘Tones of Home’ by Thomas A. Erb

Ashley and Maurice are in love. The two of them are headed to her hometown for the holidays to share the good news with her family. Those two things would drive any young man to drink but add the fact that he’s from the south and an African-American and they are headed to rural upstate town of Arcadia Falls, NY, where the reputation of toothless and inbred rednecks even scares the streetwise kid from North Carolina. Nevertheless, they are truly in love and Maurice is sure he’s encountered more dangerous things on the gang-filled streets of Durham.

After a few practical jokes go wrong, Maurice is introduced to the Vanslycke family and welcomed with a lot of drinking and backslapping. An overzealous brother and a promiscuous bartender are the least of his concerns. Little do they know that four strangers are about to enter The Torchlight Inn and will forever change their lives.

Blood flows as these Faux, Fab Four impersonators search for the “One”. They have a list, one of the bar’s occupants is on it, and they aren’t leaving until they have found them. No one is safe.

A heavy winter storm rages outside the small tavern, while rage and gun fire rage inside. Can the young lovers escape? Who is the “One”? And what do the Frightful Four want?

‘Off Limits’ by Dean Harrison

For spring break, Ellen Campbell is not going to party at the beach—she’s taking her new boyfriend, Shawn Farris, home to Miller Falls to meet her parents for the first time. She is very excited about it, but also nervous as to how her father, a famous crime writer, will take to Shawn, her very first boyfriend. Nevertheless, she is confident things will go great. After all, Shawn’s a great guy—she wouldn’t have fallen for him otherwise. But when the happy couple arrives to the house, they find an unexpected guest—Ellen’s brother, the black sheep of the family.

He has returned home after a long hiatus, and Ellen is terrified to find out why. This family reunion may not go as well as she thought, especially after Ellen’s brother, seeking forgiveness, invites them to come along with him for a beer at a bar called The Torchlight Inn.

Workin' Them Angels- 2011 -The Year it all begins!

As amazing and productive 2010 was, boy oh boy, 2011 is going to make it look like I was taking a nap that would have embarrassed good ol’ Rip Van Winkle. I have some great news, some amazing things planned for this year, and I am extremely proud of the projects that will be coming out.

Here is a rundown of solidified projects: (Some came out last year but so close to 2011, I threw them in anyway.)

“Zombie Novella”- Let us just say this sucker would have made Dino proud!

“Holiday Picture Book”- I’m very, very excited about this project. Once finished I’m hoping to have out in time for the Christmas shopping season. It just might replace “T’was A Night…”

“Vampire Novella”- Yup, that’s right... I may be a day late and a dollar short, but I’m throwing my hat into the vamp ring. Don’t think it’s just another Twilight of Rice rip off. Trust me you’ll dig it.

I will of course be doing various book covers and mural paintings throughout the year. Maybe even a short story or three.

The Muse has returned! And She brought Irish Whiskey and Hope!

When I sat down to write a year end retrospective blog, as I have done every year since I put on my writer’s cap and got to work a few years ago, a flood of memories filled my tired noggin and sent chills of happiness and sadness through me.

2010 has been the epitome of contrasts. Of so many wonderful new opportunities and of painful losses. And I know that each and every one of you has been down the same worn path so I guess I needed to share my little tale of the year that was two thousand and ten.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” Now, I know I’ve read that some where before- maybe on the back of a Capn’ Crunch. Bah, anywhos. It truly was a magical year for me for my writing and artistic career. On the personal side of things, well, it wasn’t so shiny and happy.

2010 was really good to me when it came to my writing and art career. I will post a bit later about all the really killer projects I have coming out, this blog was more about what a downer the end of last year was and I was prepared to lay the depressive shellac on pretty darn good too until something really amazing happened to me a few days ago. It’s one of the most extraordinary things that have ever happened to me.

Some of you know some of you don’t, that my Dad passed away the first week of December. Yeah, doesn’t that just reek of Christmas cheer and crap-coated gumdrops and rotted sugar plums? So as you can guess, it was a miserable times around the Erb Homestead. Then my already tenuous and pricky Muse decided to flip me the bird and headed south for the Holidays… Trust me, that little witch was slated for boatload of coal in her stocking for sure, until… but that comes a bit later.

I had deadlines and the closer they came, the more I wanted nothing to do with any of it. I then learned that a friend of mine’s father was in the hospital and not doing well. I (as well as my brother) grew up hanging at their house and we were really close with the entire family, so can you say “Junk Punch #3”? I knew you could. (Say, isn’t that a Beatles tune?) Anyway, so that sent me and my creativity in a dark spiral that made my head spin.

So, being the tough little trooper that I am, I staggered, crawled, and cried my way through the holidays. (God bless Shelly for putting up with me. No easy feat.) As New Year’s Eve approached I tried to look at it like I do every New Year. A new start. A fresh perspective on life, insert-blah-blah-blah here. I fine evening was had but I awoke the next day with the same piss-poor feeling as the last six weeks. Ughghg.

Then I got the call that my friend’s Dad had passed away New Year’s Day morning. Happy damn New Year huh?

But here’s where that “extraordinary event” happened that I mentioned about thirteen paragraphs ago happened.

I awoke last Tuesday morning feeling like death warmed over and damn surly once again. I was brushing my teeth and staring at my “Chief Thundercloud” face and pleaded to God, the creative muses, hell even my Muse to let my use, to turn the grief and sadness, angry into my art. Please just let me get passed all this darkness and death and to let my writing be the torch that illuminates the way out.

Well, I think I mumbled something that sounded like, “Yeah, whatever. Like anyone’s listening anyway,” and proceeded with my morning walk with my dogs; Rask and Duchess. I was mulling over where to go with my short story that was due to the editor by February first then it hit me like an 18 pound sledge hammer! Now I can’t tell you what it was, however, it was the solution to my story woes as well as my personal woes that have been a dark albatross for the past month or so.

After the walk, (which was probably far too short if you as the pooches) I set to work on my inspiration and later that afternoon, received an email that solidified my new outlook and a much needed confidence booster.

So, no more depressing blogs. (At least for now ;o) ) I truly believe that positive vibes bring even more positive things. And I’m pretty damn sure my Dad would want me to stop whining and get my ass back in the chair where it belongs.

So, the next blog you all will read from me will have a list of really great projects and work that I am sure you will dig and I am very proud of.

I even think I saw my Muse take a sip of her Tullamore Dew.

This witch better be sharing and not leaving any time soon.

Of Blood & Drumsticks

I’ve been playing drums on and off since, I was sixteen years old. I don’t know why I picked the sticks up. I have no blooming idea why I chose the skins. I think they chose me.

Twenty-seven years I’ve been jamming the drums. Although there were a fair amounts of time where I would stray for a bit, but I would always keep coming back the primal instrument.

I’ve been wanting to write a good, solid blog for a while now and just couldn’t rattle my old brain to come up with something worth writing or hell, more importantly, worth your time reading it. However, after today’s events, I think I may have something. You will have to be the judge of whether you wasted your time or not.

If you have ever played the drums, or guitar for that matter, you will be all too familiar with the abuse your hands and fingers take once you start playing the instrument on a daily basis. It hurts and it can hurt like hell. Well for me, and every drummer, (who is self-taught) the damage were blisters and bloody fingers from smacking the drum rims or hitting my own hands like a complete clumsy dolt that I am.

It hurt twenty-seven years ago, and it still hurts today. Which brings me to my point.

I’ve played in bands and have had great times as well as rough, “why the hell to I bother” times. Bands are like a girlfriend and are just as testy and fickle and somehow, some way, you come away feeling like you’ve been screwed; sometimes in a good way, sometimes…. Ah, not so much.

Right now, at this very moment, I bet you are asking; “Uh, Tom, are your getting to your point at anytime with this blog or are you just waxing nostalgic?” Well, here I am and here is blasted point, dear reader!

I haven’t been in a band in a couple years but still play drums a few days a week. Playing the drums is actually part of my OCD ritual before I put my big bum in chair and start writing. Hey, we all have our own thing… RIGHT????!!!!

However, I tonight I sat down and pressed play on the CD player and started jamming along some Black Crowes tune and was well off on my way of my cozy ritual. That was until I felt a shattering pain in my left index finger. You know the one that does the whole snare drum, backbeat thing. I look down, as Christ Robinson keeps belting out the tune and I see bright red blood spilling out of my now, throbbing index finger. It spewed its lifeblood onto the white drumhead and it soaked it up like a sponge.

I sat on the drum stool, dropping every possible “F-bomb” I can create. And lord knows, I am pretty damn good at it. I wiped my bloody finger on my pant leg and kept jamming and my mind became lost in the thought of blood and drumsticks and my whole life over the past forty-three years.

This moment was a realization that no matter how long you let your muse or creativity sit by the way-side or lay dormant, the passion and need to play/create will emerge and push you past the point of self-doubt and pain (or bloody fingers) to where you know you are doing what you are MEANT to be doing. That and, while you might be rusty and feel that you suck, you must push past the pain and that uncomfortable period when you start something new or even have a bloody-finger set-back with a writing project.

My bloody finger reminded me of how and why I came to play and love the drums. Now, by some strange celestial co-pilot, I have found my path following that of the intrepid writer. Its funny how while when I write, my hands or fingers don’t get blooded, but my heart and soul and mind do. Writing is a rough and violent passion and it demands a lot. But I can live with that.

For I have found a calling that I could never, would have never dreamed of.

A writer.

My age doesn’t bother me. Nor does the numerous bloody fingers or emotional moments my life path has chosen for me.

I am a writer, a drummer, and a dreamer.

I am pretty sure that even at forty three, I have plenty of bloody fingers in my future.

…and I can dig that.

When the ball dropped on New Year’s Eve last year, I had one goal for 2010. That was to be published by the end of the year. It’s funny how things happen in cluster and out of the blue. As I type this blog, I am astonished at the thought of what has transpired for me as of late. Here is the lowdown.

CONtext 23 and new online work coming in September!

Another CONtext has come and gone and this might be the best one for me personally so far. (Although, getting to met Brian Keene at my first one will be very hard to beat.)

I feel very, very blessed at the dear friends I know have because of that small convention in Ohio.
My good friends, Two Scoops: Ty and Dean solidified our Twisted Tales from the Torchlight Inn Anthology and I'm very proud of that book and the friends that I have now because of it.
I wanted to thank Shelly, my wife for coming along and putting up with all the shenanigans that transpire at conventions. I think she did just fine with the crew!

I also owe and deep and heartfelt to the wonderfully kind and supportive SHROUD Family! (which I now feel lucky to be a part of.) A more loyal group of folks you'll never, very find!!!

It is with great pride and excitement that I announce my first publication! That’s right my friends, as of February 2011, I will be a bone-fide, honest to goodness, published writer! A Crisis of Creative Faith: Fact or Fiction?

I’m sure at least once in every creative person’s life we all have a crisis of faith. And if you’re anything like me, its more like once every other hour or so…okay, okay, maybe not that often but lordy me, it sure the hell feels like it sometimes. Maybe this blog is a bit too personal but I am who I am and I write from the heart so if you are reading this, well, it’s because you want to. And thank you for that!

It amazes me how all the passion, talent and commitment can all be beaten, stabbed, raped and left for dead by the outside world. Whether it’s by society that never has truly embraced art and taken it seriously, (which is funny, considering how much money is spent on films, music, and television shows.) but then again, look at the quality of the majority of the swill that’s been regurgitated from the corporations. But that’s another rant for another time Highlander. For now, I will stick with how deeply ingrained in us sometimes to almost feel guilty for being artists/writers/painters etc.

Oh, I tangent again… sorry. I was talking about the outside forces that stymie us and try to crush our creative spirit. The other things that can do a number on us are the negative Neds and Nelly’s in our lives. You know the ones. The ones who so wish they could do what we are doing (or at least busting our asses trying to do) that hey belittle what you are working on. Come on, everyone has at least one family member, friend or co-worker that does nothing but tell you:
“Oh, you’ll never get published.” or “why are you wasting your time, get a “real” job and stop wasting your time dumb ass.” Again, I KNOW you KNOW more than one of these lovely people. I sure the hell do. And I’ll tell you that it’s amazing how much the negative people can affect us. They are like spiritual leeches that suck the creative energy right out of us.

Now I know that we do have control over these folks and how much you “let them in”, and that was a harsh lesson for me to learn because when I’m so full of passion and truly love what I’m doing, man, I want to share it with everyone that will listen and even some that don’t want to. Alas, those days are over for me. I’m finding and surrounding myself with the folks that really understand (and if they don’t fully understand, at least they respect and care about what I’m doing.) and dig what I’m working so hard for. Being a writer isn’t easy and starting later in life with a with whole other bag o’tricks that I’ve tried and have let go makes it a little easier for those Negative Neds and Nancy’s to load up on the “What ya wasting your time on now, dreamer?” slings and arrows. But with the right friends and creative colleagues (who are great friends too,) around me, I feel as though I’m piecing together a nice suit of Creative/Spiritual Plate mail armor to protect my hyper-sensitive butt. I’m slowly taking ownership over this aspect of my creative and personal like, but sometimes, it the snarky comments and black tendrils of negativity swirl back in under my radar and before I know it, BLAM-O!, I’m in a four alarm fire of self doubt and getting all gussied up for my very own pity party. I do hope some day I’ll have those demons beaten once and for all, But onto one last thought on my crisis of creative faith:

-Rejection, harsh critiques and doubting one’s abilities.

Yeah these are a rip-roaring sumbitches of the highest degree and can do more to drag you down to Davey Jones’ depths of despair and self pity than the most ill willing friend or family member.

While in college and getting my degrees in art education, we spent a lot of time on the proper way to run a critiquing session and even with all of my experience and years of working in the visual arts realm, it still never easy to opening yourself up and show the world your heart and soul; your baby, your creation. So, all this rambling is in reference to some recent events that have shaken me a bit and had me doubting my talent and creative ability.

Well, after a woe-is me weekend, where I swam in the murky waters of “Oh, Tom , you suck and should go work at Wal-mart or go paint those pretty little rocks with butterflies or lady bugs on them. Uh…no!

I awoke this morning with a concrete, bone fide f-u-Charlie attitude. And has led me to my current position. I have a plan. A master plan of attack for my writing career. That’s write all you Ned’s and Nancy’s out there, I said WRITING CAREER! Yup, I’m a strong believer in that whole, if you want to be a duck, you have to walk, and quack like a duck. So that’s just what I’m going to be doing from here on out.

I know that with every rejection and, or harsh critique, I WILL get better. My craft will be honed and my abilities will only get better and I WILL be damn successful. I know many of you have been in this same place and I’m sure you’re damn tired of it. Well shout it out loud and shout it proud:

“I’m a writer and a damn good one! And if I’m not good yet, get out of my way, because I’m not going softly into that good night and you can’t keep me from trying as hard as I can and having goals and dreams are the sole reason to live. Without having something to reach for and aspire to, well, that’s the worse than any horror story I could or even King or Keene could write.

So, ass in chair, music cranked and cold beverage by your side, you can and will create the art only YOU can offer to the world…

Spring has sprung in the Land of Erb!!

As the geese continue their way back up north and the days become longer and the deep, deep snows of winter begin to melt away, many great things are beginning to happen in the world of Erb! I’ve been busy working on many writing projects and here is a quick update:

• I’ve been contacted by a small publisher seeking a novella and have begun conjuring something up for them.

• “Tones of Home” novella is almost complete. As soon as the rest of the anthology is finished, it will be submitted for publication.

• “Snow Black- A monster novel”- work has resumed and I hope to complete the first draft before all trace of winter disappears.

• I started a rough outline for a Young Adult novel. I will refer to it at as “The After School Project”. I really am enjoying the concept and potential and will be querying to publishers to test the waters of interest.

• I have also roughly outlined my dark noir/assassin book project called “E.o.E”. Again, I really dig the concept and main character for this project as well.

Submission Update:

• “The Unfortunate Case of Carleton Meeks” and “Cutting Class” are still looking for a home. They’ve been submitted and I am waiting impatiently for responses.

This was a quick update and I could work up a blog on the health care bill/law and all that jazz but that would be too distracting. I will post soon as more interesting news comes to pass.

The year behind, the year ahead- more ramblings.

At this time every year, everyone and their cousin do their “looking back” posts and blogs and other such shenanigans. And of course, I am going to do the same thing here…

As I look back on the 2009, it all seems like a blur. I don’t know if it’s getting older makes the days, minutes and hours rush by, but it seems like yesterday that we were getting ready for New Year’s Eve. But alas, it is what it is and here we are.

It was a good year overall. Of course there were speed bumps here and there but isn’t that just life? I think so. I think the secret is to live for the moment and cherish those small flashes of time because at the end of the day, it’s all we have. I had a few small health issues over the year and thank the gods that none of them were life threatening. I’m a hearty Irishman, (thanks Mom) so I am hanging in there. I am sure tonight over cold beverages I will swear to start all kinds of new health and diet regimens and I will be a good boy in 2010, but you and I BOTH know that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. And ironically enough, my Dad’s family business was blacktop and paving...Huh...Whoddathunkit...Funny.

There were some personal trials and tribulations wherein I had to learn the hard way about many things. But I’m sure I’m not alone on this one either. We just push on no matter what. It’s what we do.

I did a few murals this year and really enjoyed the process. I am looking to get more customers this year and hone my painting skills even further. So, if you are looking for a killer large “moveable” mural, drop me a note. I will of course be painting more scenes and covers from and for my books and short stories. Hell, I’m going to run out of room in my studio. I might need to run a contest on the blog for a one of a kind painting….hmmm, not a bad idea. Stay tuned in the New Year for that one.

My writing career, while still in its fledgling stages, has grown leaps and bounds since I started writing seriously almost three years ago. I attended CONtext 22 in Ohio for the second year and I am so glad I did. I not only got see friends from the year before, but I also met some new friends who I have a feeling will be lifelong friends. I have many great memories from this year’s con. Getting kicked out of the Apex Suite party was very notable. Then as we made plans to move a small portion of the party to our room, Dathar, shouts in front of hotel security (in his best drunkenese) “Hey guys, party is in our room.. Oh it’s room #123”. LOL classic.

The Shroud Party once again was amazing. The live Funky Werepig radio show filled with flying Moon pies was priceless as well. This convention is not to be missed. I do hope to be able to make it next year.

Here is a quick update of my works in 2009:

-Aeternus Umbra- My first novel went through many drafts this year and while my goal was to publish it this year, things happened and now it’s being slated for 2010 submission.

-Snow Black- A monster novel- This is my second novel and I began it as a National Novel Writing Month project. I’ve written 24k words and really dig where it’s headed. I hope to complete this in the New Year.

-The Unfortunate Case of Carleton Meeks- My very first completed short story and I really like it. It will be submitted in January.

-Cutting Class- My second completed short and I am very proud of this one. I feel that my skills as a short writer are growing stronger and I’m gaining confidence.

I have started several other projects and they are all in various stages of development.

What’s coming in 2010-?

Well this year’s goal to be published- A lofty goal but one that I am determined to achieve. I will be farming out my short stories like a madman and pushing A.U. extremely hard. I am very proud of them all and want to share them with you all.

New plans involve two anthology projects. The first one is tentatively known as the T.D.T. Project. I am working with two very talented writers, Ty Schwamberger and Dean Harrison. In the anthology (novella) we all start with the same theme and take the twisted tales any which way our demented minds adventure to. I am really excited about this great opportunity and I will post more information as the project gets underway.

The second anthology is similar concept to the one above, but with a little different angle. Joseph Mulak, myself and another great writer(s) to be named soon, will be crafting young adult novellas revolving around an angel and demon concept. This anthology is slated for a mid-late summer time frame. Again, more to come on this exciting project.

I will also be working on more short stories and even a screenplay. I’ve also been feeling the itch to get back playing drums and songwriting so; there might be a new band project in the New Year as well. Who knows?

I want to thank everyone in my life for your passionate support and love. You all are amazing and I am a lucky guy to have you in my life.

2009 was a year full of many great moments and many great friends old and new. It’s been a rocky year for all of us-With the economy in the crapper and many folks losing their jobs and even their homes. It’s been rough. I do hope 2010 brings you and your loved ones all greater fortune and happiness.

So here we are. It’s Christmas Eve and I’m sure everyone is shambling about like those adorable zombies in Day of The Dead at the mall. Ah, ‘tis the season. But anyway, after my semi-depressing blog post last week, I’ve decided to add a new post. Want to hear it? Here it go…

There is something about Christmas Eve that despite me performing my best George C. Scott, Scrooge impersonation, does warm my heart and fills me with so many fond memories. I have alluded to them on the great black blog prior. But it was those memories and some very specific Christmas tunes that tickled my cockles and gave me a warm fuzzy this morning. (Easy, it’s a family holiday!!)

I hope you all gather with those you love and hold dear to celebrate tonight. I also hope the laughter and kinship flows freely and plentiful. Life is too short and we need to embrace and cherish these moments while we have them.

To all of my family, both local and far, offline and on…I wish you the Merriest of Christmas’s and the Happiest of Holidays!!! Hugs the ones you love my friends again, while you have them

The Grand ol' Erb's Pontifications of Christmas

Well HO HO HO! And I can do that 'cause I'm a fat guy! But that jolly time of the year is upon us and it boggles my mind. It seems like it was just midsummer and the warm weather parties were in full swing. Hell, I feel like I just left all of my good friends at CONtext in Ohio and lo and behold, here we are facing a new year. Where does the time go? Now that sounds like a song lyric....hmmm, I'll have to get back to that one.
As I sat down to write my December/Holiday blog, many thoughts and idea came into my stormy mind. Do I go the sappy, drunk Irishman route, (which comes extremely easy btw) or should I reflect on all the blessings and good things in the Erbster's life? A good ol’ fashion quandary really.

There was a time when I absolutely loved Christmas. I have never been a huge religion guy, but I did love the heathen aspect. Santa Claus, Rudolph, all the cheesy Christmas tunes. The amazing Rankin & Bass shows. Everything. The traditions are what I loved the most. Maybe that melts perfectly with my O.C.D., but that’s whole other blog post all together.
Growing up, I would go (along with the rest of my family) to my grandparent’s house and all the aunts and uncles, cousins would be there. The old house was packed with Erbs. Now in most states, that would get you arrested but in this case, it was kosher. There would be holiday music playing and all kinds of merriment going on. One of my favorite uncles would be at the bar partaking in his Irish-goodness and telling great tales and jokes. While my Grandmother seemed to spend the entire evening smiling. I always assumed it was because she had all of her family near. That that makes me smile to this day.

There was always a fine spread of food. My Grandfather always had the best BBQ Lil’ Smokeys. (Watch yourself; this is a family, holiday blog!). No one ever went home hungry. You bet your sweet arse that my Grandma saw to that. Of course the highlight, (at least for us kids) where the sea of brightly wrapped presents under the massive Christmas tree in the front parlor. Looking back, I remember my Grandparents sitting next to one another just watching their family laughing, opening presents and having a wonderful time. Of course I know there were all kinds of real life shenanigans going on, but for that one snapshot moment in time, it was perfect. And this is coming from a lifelong, card carrying pessimist. I miss those days. That brings me back to change…
Many have change since my grandparents passed away. Even more so since my Mom passed away. I found myself searching for meaning. Searching for a way to recapture those moments of old. Well, that isn’t going to happen. Yes, that’s right; my pessimistic alter ego finally reared its ugly mug. I hate to say it, but it’s true. Now, that’s not to say that you can’t create new traditions and great memories. It’s just that I had to come to the realization that I will NEVER get those old feelings of Christmas Eve at my Grandparent’s or the beautiful memories of waking up before 5 a.m. and me and my brother banging on the to walk my parent’s up. Just so we could see what Santa had brought us. No. Sadly, that is something that I will have to hold and cherish in my mind. And that I do. For, I strongly believe that Christmas is solely a time to remember. A time to look back and hold the one’s we’ve lost close to our hearts. And thusly, a holiday of tradition. And for all that, I dig it. And I miss a lot of people and traditions. So I guess I am looking forward to Christmas. The music brings me back. All the TV shows still make me smile. I can't pass by any time I see Clark Griswold brandishing a chainsaw. So, I guess there's hope for me yet. No need to send the Ghost of Christmas future after my butt.
Change, although my worst enemy, I’ve learned to accept it. It’s the only constant in our lives. Embrace it or go batshit crazy trying to fight it.
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and create a boat load of new memories that you can cherish a carry with you forever. Please forgive me for any excessive negativity. I am the jolliest a**hole this side of the nuthouse.

Hug your kids, your Mom and Dad, your brothers and sisters, and your grandparent’s, if you’re lucky enough to still have them around. Change can be good…

We took these at the beautiful State Theater in Ithaca, New York. The medieval theme fit my dark and intriguing style of fiction. I really liked how these have turned out. I have more coming soon.

NaNo Update:

The month is about half over and I’m a tad behind in word count but really feel that Snow Black-A Monster Novel is coming along great! The characters are coming alive and the plot is taking on a life of its own. I will be posting an excerpt in the future, so stay tuned to my blog to check it out.

While my first book, Aeternus Umbra hasn't been submitted yet, prolific book reviewer and writer, Kurt Criscione has been so kind as to write up a quick blurb on it. Strange moment at the Mall. Has this ever happened to you???

Okay, while I was waiting to hit the 2pm showing of Zombieland, I was at the local mall's food court partaking in some very, fine dining. (not) and I was thinking about all the funkily amazing zombiegoodness that awaited me, whilst I ate my wonderful chow, I did my usual fun hobbie of people watching. I was looking about and an elderly woman in a maroon colored jacket caught my eye. I took a bite of a nice salty french fry (we can talk about my crappy diet later) and my heart stopped and the half -eaten fry fell onto the tray.
I don't know if this has ever happened to you, but this has happend to me on various occassions in my life but today. I wept. I swear to god, that it was my Mom! She passed away in 2004! I watched as she continued walking through the food court and I felt my heart beat like a raging bull and my eyes filled with tears as she went. I went to wipe my eyes and take a breath and when I looked up... she was gone... WTF?..Shook me to my core.
Just wanted to share and see what you all thought?

ZOMBIELAND! a quick review.

First off, any zombie flick out there, I love! Cheesier the better. So, that being said, I am a tad pro-walking dead and a bit biased. So shoot me... the head man... the head.. geesh.. newbie!
Let me just say, from the opening credits and how they are incorperated with the scenes, I knew this was going to kick some moby ass. And I was right.
The casting was spot on. I can't think of the kid who was the main charcter, but he had a Paulie Bleaker feel to him. Which worked well, with his nerotic, anxiety filled lines and scenes. Woody Harrelison rocked. It's great to see all the "erb" smoking is helping his method acting. His banjo playing was superb.
If you like gore. well my zombiemanicas, there is blood and flesh a-plenty in this flick. It gets an A just for the blood n guts.. Top notch. And I also applaud the creative ways in which the dispatch of the undead bastards.
This is nothing but a purely fun, gore-filled, laughter filled, fun ride. There is an amazing cameo by someone we all know and love... You will laugh your ass off.
It gets a 5/5 on my Zombiemeter!
Go check it out. Don't expect Shaeksepear my friends... We ARE talking zombies and Woody here.

New Project Announcement!

Yes indeed folks! I am embarking on another project! I've been invited to take part in a anthology by talented writers;Ty Schwamberger and Dean Harrison.
The project will be 3 different novellas, based on a common theme.. The stories will follow that theme, but the three of us will have our own vision of where the story should go. I'm really looking forward to this project and want to thank Ty for asking me along on this adventure.

Aeternus Umbra is my very first novel and I am working on hopefully, that last draft before submission!!! I will have a seperate post about what this baby is all about. It's my first love here and I hope you all really like it when it gets out there!

Snow Black- is a new idea I have for a nice frozen tale... It's in the rough stage now and I want to flesh it out a little before I try to write it in November. More details to come.
